A Brief History of Diamond Painting
Diamond painting may feel like a modern craft phenomenon, but its roots trace back to mosaic art—an ancient technique used for over 5,000 years! Early mosaics were made of tiny pieces of stone, glass, or ceramic, assembled to create stunning murals and decorative patterns.
The concept of gem-based art began in Asia, and in the early 2010s, diamond painting kits started appearing in China as a simplified, accessible take on mosaic crafting. The craft quickly gained global popularity, and today, diamond painting is loved by people of all ages for its stress-relieving, visually satisfying, and creative appeal.

Glossary of Diamond Painting Terms
💎 Drills – The tiny resin diamonds used to create the painting. These come in two types: round drills (easier & faster to place) and square drills (create a more seamless look).
🖼 Canvas – The fabric sheet printed with a color-coded pattern and a sticky adhesive layer to hold the diamonds in place.
🎨 Color Code (DMC Code) – A universal thread color-matching system originally used for embroidery floss, now applied to diamond painting for consistent color accuracy.
🖊 Applicator Pen (Drill Pen) – A small tool used to pick up and place the diamonds onto the canvas. Some have a multi-placer tip to apply multiple drills at once.
📦 Full Drill vs. Partial Drill
• Full Drill: The entire canvas is covered in diamonds.
• Partial Drill: Only certain sections (like the main subject) are covered in diamonds, while the background remains printed.
🛑 Poured Glue vs. Double-Sided Adhesive
• Poured Glue: A clear, flexible, and long-lasting adhesive (preferred for premium kits).
• Double-Sided Adhesive: A sticky tape layer that can be prone to bubbling or wrinkling over time.
🔲 Multi-Placer Tool – An attachment for the applicator pen that lets you place several drills at once, speeding up the process.
✨ Sealing a Diamond Painting – A method of coating and protecting a finished painting, especially if it’s not being framed under glass.
🖼 Framing & Displaying – You can frame your completed painting with or without glass, mount it on foam board, or even turn it into a decorative hanging tapestry!
